If you thought there was a glitch in the matrix when you checked the leaderboard for the Mexico Open at Vidanta this past weekend, you’re not alone. We practically predicted it would happen (not really), and we still still couldn’t believe it. Five players out of last year’s top ten managed to crack the top ten again in 2023. Maybe there really is a glitch in the matrix, or maybe Tony Finau, Jon Rahm, Brandon Wu, Cam Champ, and Patrick Rodgers have the Mexico Open course completely sussed. Either way, we’d be willing to bet mucho dinero, they’ll top the leaderboard in Mexico again next year.
This year, the biggest story came from two of the biggest names on tour flip-flopping their 2022 result as Tony Finau claimed his second win of the season, three shots better than second-place finisher Jon Rahm.
Rahm was nipping at his heels after catching fire on Saturday, setting a course record 61, but it wasn’t enough for top billing. Finau’s steady, consistent performance allowed him to join the unique company of only Scottie Scheffler, Max Homa, and, of course, Jon Rahm himself as the only other multi-win golfers on the PGA Tour this season (Sorry, Talor Gooch. Maybe if you spelled your name with a “Y”, we’d include you and that other tour in our report. Just kidding. If anyone wants to write about the LIV Villains, let us know).
With Tony Finau peaking just in time for Oak Hill, one has to wonder if he’s finally ready to trade the albatross around his neck for enough birdies to get that first major win.
Alright, let’s see who else made some scratch.
